First Appointment Support

First Session Guide

What to expect before, during, and after your first appointment.

Beginning therapy can raise practical and personal questions. Your first session is a chance to talk through what brings you in, ask questions, and begin identifying what kind of care may be most helpful. You only need enough clarity to begin the conversation.

A first appointment with room for questions

The first appointment is not a test or a full life history. It is a starting point for understanding what feels most important right now and what next steps may make sense.

What to Expect

Before, during, and after your first session

This section outlines the basic flow so the appointment feels less unknown. You can ask questions, take your time, and decide what you want to share.

01

Before Your Session

Before your appointment, you may be asked for basic information needed for scheduling, consent, billing, and record keeping.

02

After You Book

After your appointment is booked, you will receive the details needed to prepare, including location or video appointment information.

03

During the Session

Your first session usually includes a conversation about your concerns, relevant history, goals, and any questions you may have.

04

After the Session

You and your therapist can discuss possible next steps, whether ongoing support feels like a fit, and how you may want to continue.

Before Your Appointment

Preparing for your first session

A little preparation can help, but it does not need to be complicated. These details are here to make the first step easier to picture.

Session Formats

Sessions may be available in person, by video, or by phone depending on therapist availability, location, and what fits your needs.

What May Be Useful to Think About

It can help to think about what has been feeling difficult, what you hope may feel different, and any questions you would like to ask.

You Choose What to Share

You can ask questions, pause, change direction, or leave something for a future session.

For video appointments, connection details will be sent by email through the Jane App booking system before your session. For in-person appointments, available locations can be selected when booking.
